The temple is known as the yoni-blood temple because it is believed that the goddess Kamakhya's yoni (vagina) fell at the site where the temple now stands.

The temple is also known as the Yoni Peetha, which means "sacred abode of the vulva," and it is believed that the goddess's menstrual cycle takes place in the temple. 

The temple celebrates the annual Ambubachi Mela festival, during which the goddess's menstrual cycle is believed to occur, and it is closed for three days. On the fourth day, it is opened to the public, and the devotees.

The temple is open throughout the year, except during the annual Ambubachi Mela festival or other certain events when it may be closed to the public. 

Maa kamakhya aarti takes place at 7.30 pm daily.

The temple darshan hours for devotees are from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and from 2:30 p.m. to 5:15 p.m.

Online booking of tickets for darshan of Maa Kamakhya is not available. But for offline tickets, counters are located within the temple complex. And it opens at 7 a.m.

For Kamakhya temple darshan, tickets are available in two types:

1. VIP Darshan Entry: Rs. 501/- Per Person
2. Defence Personnel: Rs.50/- Per Person
3. General Entry: Free of Cost 

To avoid long queues, it is advised to reach the ticket counter before two hour.

The best time to visit depends on the visitor's preferences and the purpose of their visit. The temple is open throughout the year except during certain festivals or events.

The months of September to February are considered the best time to visit Kamakhya Temple due to the pleasant and comfortable weather, with temperatures usually between 10°C to 25°C, perfect for sightseeing and outdoor activities.

For those interested in the annual Ambubachi Mela, June is the best time to visit the temple. This festival is celebrated during the monsoon season, when the goddess Kamakhya is believed to undergo her menstrual cycle. 

The temple is closed for three days during this festival, and devotees from all over the globe gather here to offer their prayers and seek blessings.

Travel by air to kamakhya temple

If you travel by air, then Lokpryia Gopinath International Airport ( Guwahati airport ) is about 20 KM  from the Nilachal Hill. From airport you can hire a taxi/cab or board a bus.

Travel by train to kamakhya temple

Kamakhya railway station is the nearest station to the temple, Its is hardly 5 KM distance from the temple complex. You can book a Taxi/ Cab or board a local bus.

From Guwahati raiway station it is about 8 KM distance to the Shakti Peet. Taxi/ Cab and local buses are available 24/7.
